Meet the Band: Al Tuck

Despite all the praise he gets from his musical colleagues, many people don't seem to know who Al Tuck is. Since the early '90s he's been playing shows and blowing audiences away, yet fame and fortune has escaped him.

We don't like when this happens to talented folk like Al Tuck so we decided to ask him to be apart of our column. We're willing to go ahead and call him one of the best songwriters in Canada (folks like Feist and Jason Collett already have) and if you don't believe us, you'll soon get a chance to be converted to Tuckism: he's stopping by The Tranzac on July 23.

You can also donwload "One Day the Warner" off his All Time Favourites record right now, here.

How do you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard you before?
Depends on what I imagine they'd like to hear. Usually say blues, folk, country, but all those things have negative connotations. Now that I have thought about it, I think you would like to hear me call my songs "Neo-Classics".

If you could open for one current band that you haven't played with before, who would it be?
Merle Haggard & His Strangers

If you could play one venue you've never played before, what would it be?
All Souls Chapel, Charlottetown.

Who, in your opinion, has/had the best facial hair of any band ever?
Esquerita? [pics here]

What was the craziest live show you've ever seen?
Little Orton Hoggett, after he got back from seeing Garth Brooks.

What was the craziest live show you've ever played?
Roller rink in Sault-Saint Marie.

What's your favourite song to play live? Why?
"What Kind of Soul?” Because it divides the crowd.

What was the first record you ever bought? When was the last time you listened to it?
I think "Best of BTO." Many moons since I heard that, although, Randy plays it sometimes.

If you could only listen to one band or artist for the rest of your life, who would you pick?
Blind Boy Grunt

If you could switch places with another musicians in some type of "Freaky Friday" type incident, who would you want it to be?
I don't know "Freaky Friday". God, this is turning into a research project.

If you could have one musical superpower, what would you want it to be?
Have it already. Humility.
