Meet The Band: Amenta

Are you into beautifully innovative, soulful music that could make Erykah Badu pee her pants? Then you'll love the music of Amenta. Every once in a while someone comes along to knock the music industry on its ass and, from what we've heard, Toronto's Amenta could very well be the next person to do it. We caught up with her recently to ask her our usual bunch of silly questions for the latest edition of Meet The Band:

How do you describe your music to someone who hasn't heard you before?
Electronica-related? I'm influenced by so many genres but my vocal work so far has been pretty jazzy. It's like warm, water based ooze, tingly with a lil burn from ginger/peppermint extract… or something.

What was the craziest live show you've ever seen?
Janelle Monae, body surfing…it looked really fun. I really want to try that.

What was the craziest live show you've ever played?
Cookies, Berlin - it get's pretty wild in there. I'm pretty sure I hit my head on the ceiling at one point - though I won't say how.

What's your favourite song to play live? Why?
"Mesmerized." For whatever reason it causes me to make funny, highly descriptive facial expressions (ex. Charlie Chaplin) and do strange things with my hands. [You can download "Mesmerized" for free below.]

What was the first record you ever bought? When was the last time you listened to it?
The first record I ever bought was Weather Report's Black Market. It was because I really loved the cover. I totally lucked out on that one. I listened to it about 6 months ago.

Who was your favourite band (or artist) when you were 12 years old? Do you still like them?
I was obsessed with Billie Holiday from about 12 to 20. I would go to the library and rent cassette tapes. I'd would sit in my room with a stiff drink of ginger ale and mourn with Billie over lost loves or "Strange Fruit". Yes, I still love Billie.

If you could switch places with another musicians in some type of "Freaky Friday" type incident, who would you want it to be?
Thom Yorke. We have some great dance moves. We both have great legs - I haven't seen Thom Yorke's legs but I'd imagine they'd be pretty nice.

If you absolutely had to get a face tattoo of album art from one record, which record would you want to have on your face for the rest of your life?
LOL. I'd like to meet the person that came up with these questions. Umm LOL. Miles Davis' Bitches Brew or something from Earth Wind and Fire.

If you could play one venue you've never played before, what would it be?
I've sat here for about 10 mins trying to think of somewhere when to be honest I think I would prefer to play a show on a mountain - not sure about the logistics but I think it would be pretty awesome. I guess the Opéra de Paris would be cool too - architecture wise. But i kinda have my heart set on the mountain.

Who, in your opinion, has/had the best facial hair of any band ever?
Oooooooh good question.  ZZ Top of course and umm, Håkan Wirenstrand from Little Dragon.

What would be your all-time, all-star supergroup?
What would be? Well the people in it would be as follows: Jim Morrison, me, Barrie Barlow, Jack White and Sun Ra….for now
